Location Brod, Dragash, Kosovo
Elevation Gain +1,279 m (+4,196 ft)

From the Hollows of Dragash to the Peaks of Sharr

Starting directly from the paved road at Hotel Arxhena in the picturesque mountain village of Brod (Dragash), this rigorous 23.8 km (14.8 mi) out-and-back trail takes experienced mountaineers deep into the untamed southern ranges of Kosovo. Climbing to a supreme peak elevation of 2,514 meters (8,248 ft) at Vraca e Vogël (Mala Vraca), the route sits right on the international border with North Macedonia.

The hike begins with a steep initial climb out of the valley before transitioning into a mix of dirt tracks and narrow alpine paths. Around 6 km in, hikers enter the peaceful Shutman Valley, passing near Shutman Lake (Liqeni i Shutmanit) and the higher Vračansko Lake (Srebreno / Silver Lake). The final push to the summit requires hands-on scrambling across steep grass and rocky faces—a technical and demanding section best suited for confident hikers with good navigation skills.

"A raw and demanding high-altitude journey across glacial valleys, shepherd pastures, and exposed border ridges."

Trail Highlights & Essential Tips:

  • Hotel Arxhena Trailhead: Easy asphalt access to the start point with parking and a restaurant for post-hike meals.
  • Twin Alpine Lakes: Pass by Shutman Lake and Vračansko Lake nestled in deep mountain basins.
  • Summit Scramble: Reaching Vraca e Vogël (2,514m) requires hands-on climbing over steep grass and loose rock.
  • Shepherd Huts & Dogs: The route passes active sheep farms; give livestock a wide berth to avoid guardian dogs.
